Although we've seen a seen a good uptake on domain names ending in .scot since their inception in 2014, we've also noticed that some people have been put off by the price, which is slightly higher than other common domains. We asked DotScot, the organisation behind the domain names, why .scot endings were so expensive. They told us that it's down to the economics of scale - there are fewer customers buying these domains (it's a smaller target market compared to .uk or .com) so costs end up being higher.
However, for the whole of December 2017 and January 2018 they've managed to reduce the price to try to stimulate growth to hopefully produce a permanent price drop, and we're happy to be able to pass the savings on to our customers.
So, for the next two months, you can register a .scot domain with us for £20 + VAT instead of the normal £40 + VAT. The discount is for the first year only, but we're hoping that if there's a high enough uptake then the renewal costs will come down permanently for next year.
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about .scot domains:
What do you get for your money? Well, you get a .scot domain for a year. Through us, you also get 50MB of webspace (enough for a decent website) and 1GB of mail space and unlimited mailboxes so you can have your own .scot email address. You can expand both of these if you want, to match your needs.
Are there any 'good' domain names left? Yes - there are still a lot of three- and four- letter domains available, whereas there are almost none of these generally available for .uk or .com domains. There are lots of 'keyword' domains left too. Use your imagination and then check what's available at our website http://calico.scot.
Why should you register a .scot? For many reasons - you might be running a Scottish organisation or company, or want to market a Scottish product, or simply to announce you're Scottish and proud of it.
Who can register a .scot? Anyone, actually. You don't have to be Scottish, or live in Scotland. But there should be a Scottish connection somewhere.
How do I go about getting a .scot? First, think of the domain name you want, such as "tumshie.scot". Then visit our dedicated .scot domain registration site and check if the name is available (It was this morning!). Follow the links and grab it. We'll set up the webspace and mail space for you and email you the details, and then your ready to go and you can start using it to promote your organisation, product or yourself!
